Day 2: Wherever I Lay My Hat.

Who: Bobby & Julietta
When: 18:00 onwards
Where: Cafe Royal, Piccadilly Circus

Bobby's head was starting to throb, after their shopping trip Etta had looked really tired so he'd suggested they headed back to the Royal where they'd found a spot in the plush leather sofas near the window, cracked open a couple of bottles of what would have been very expensive mineral water and soon drifted off to sleep in their seperate chairs. Now the shadows were starting to lengthen across the roadway and night time was beckoning. Holding his head with one hand, Bobby reached across the low table between them and gently patted Etta on the her foot which dangled over the edge of the seat cushion.

"Etta, hey Etta, stupid I know but best get up if we're gonna sort out what we're gonna do for kip for the night."

Julietta mumbled and kicked a little with the leg Bobby patted, not wanting to wake up. But the damage had already been done to her sleep and slowly she woke up. She yawned and rubbed her eyes before settling her gaze at Bobby.

"Hva?" she asked in Norwegian, not understanding the English right after waking up.

Bobby hadn't wanted to get too close, they could be the only two people here and the last thing he wanted to do was piss off a beautiful woman, even a pregnant one, so he'd been backing off as she came awake and didn't quite get what she'd said,

"Have I wot?" he motioned to the water on the table, "need a drink or something?" Then, in case she'd not caught his first words, "woke you up, 'cause it's gettin' late and it gets really dark here once the sun has gone down."

Julietta looked at Bobby for a while before she understood what he was saying.

"Oh, sorry... You don't speak Norwegian, I forgot," she then said smiling a little. Then she twisted in her seat, turning into a better position before reaching for a bottle of water.

"Okay, good then that you woke me up," she said before sipping a bit of water, "What you suggest then? You've been here longer than me, so..."

Bobby considered for a moment, he wasn't sure he really had a plan so to speak.

"Well, erm, I stuck a load of solar lamps I'd got out of the camping bit of Lilleywhites out on the road, so they ought to give us some light, and there's sleeping bags too. I kipped over there," he pointed to Zavvi's, a big record shop jutting out on on the corner between Regents St and Park Row. "The bag I got wos pretty comfy." he finished, aware that his suggestion sounded a bit lame.

Julietta nodded to Bobby's words, but didn't like the idea of sleeping on the floor with only a sleeping bag under her.

"I'd prefer a bed. You think we could get into a hotel or something like that? My back isn't the kind that forgives sleeping on the floor, even more so now that I've been carrying princess around with me," Julietta said patting her belly a bit.

"And I'd like something for dinner. Do we have anything? Or more like do you have anything..."

"Bed, hmm," Bobby thought aloud, then "hold on a sec" and he walked across to a discreet rack of brochures coming back holding a couple of identical ones for Le Meridien hotel.

"Here, la meridian," Bobby suggested, with little regard for the French words, "it's part of this place, just round the corner over there according to this map. Looks a bit of alright and not too far to carry the stuff. I've got a stack of those meal bags I got out of the camping place, but I don't know what else we can do for food, I've not really checked out any kitchens or anything. They'll probably be empty won't they?"

Julietta took the brochure Bobby held out and looked it over.

"This looks nice... And I think we can take the biggest and best room with the comfiest bed for ourselves if there's no one around, right?" she smiled, clearly excited about the idea of getting some sleep in a good bed.

"And even if there were any food I don't know if we should eat it... You can never know just what it has been through. Lets stick to the canned food, I think," she said thinking about it for a while. If there was no sign of other people then they couldn't tell just how long people had been away. Even if there were food and even if it looked fine you could never know.

Bobby tried to hide surprise at the suggestion they get a bed together, but his mates had always talked about how girls from Europe were more up for it so he tried to play it cool,

"yeah, er yeah, we could do that. And yer probably right about the food, can't risk catchin' nuffink can we, wot with no doctors about." He started to look around for anything they'd need to take from there, then decided it was pointless until they'd checked the hotel out and it really wasn't far away.

He looked out at the street again, the closest lanterns had started to come on in the encroaching darkness, not yet bright spots, but clearly indicating the passage of the sun.
"Right, come on then, lets get round there, see what we've got an' then decide wot else we need." He offered her his hand to help her out of the deep soft cushions of the expensive arm chair.

Julietta took Bobby's hand, glad to take any help she could get to get her butt off that chair.

"All I have are the stuff I... "bought" from the store earlier," she then said waving her hand in the general direction of the small bundle of clothes and make-up on top of which still lay the small toy tiger Julietta had woken up with.

"We should take the water. I love this water," she then said picking up one of the bottles to look at the label properly then she turned to Bobby and smiled, "It's fancy."

Bobby's voice broke a little as he replied, and he kicked himself inside for being so nervous,

"yeah, yup, it's good stuff." He emptied out the bag of batteries he'd brought from the store and handed it to Etta, "here, pack yer clothes and stuff in there, I'll grab a few bottles of the water, we can pick up a couple of lights as we go across." He pointed at a small bronze bust of a reserved looking bald man, "that'll do for a 'key', I left the fire extinguisher up at the shop."

To stop himself just jittering about he started moving, collecting things together.

Julietta took the bag Bobby gave her and packed her stuff inside. There wasn't much so it all fitted in nicely and the bag didn't weight much so she wasn't going to bug Bobby to carry it for her.

Then she went to pick up the bust Bobby had pointed out. It weighted more than she was ready to carry so she just put it back and waited for Bobby to come pick it up. She could just carry some food or water or something-lighter-than-a-bronze-bust.

"I don't have anything to wear to bed," Julietta suddenly spoke up.

Bobby was just getting the fourth bottle of water to put up on the bar, he'd found a mesh bag back there that he could carry them in, when Etta mentioned bedclothes, and he caught a bottle of wine stacked next to it, the sound of the bottle breaking coinciding the reddening of his cheeks.

"Well, I don't normally wear anything myself, what sort of thing did you mean?" he wondered if he should tell her she didn't need to dress up, she looked great the way she was. To cover up his embarassment he set about putting the bottles in to the bag.

Julietta turned to look at Bobby when she heard something break. But when there didn't seem to be anything wrong she just let it slide.

"I used to borrow t-shirts from Niels, but now I usually wear a nightdress. My mom bought me a couple of really good ones, too," Julietta said smiling, "But we don't have to go out of our way to get anything, I can always survive one night without anything on."

"OK, well, we might see something I guess, I've got a couple more T-Shirts but," he looked down at his skinny body, "I'm not sure how comfortable they'd be for you to sleep in at the moment."

He walked across with the mesh bag, put the strap of Etta's bag across his shoulder and hefting the bronze gave her a brief smile, "let's go explore then, pick up a couple of those lights as we go past could you?"

"I don't think me aand princess are going to fit into your shirts, Bobby," Julietta laughed a little thinking about what a battle it would be to try and squeeze herself into one of his shirts. It would most definitely be the eand of that shirt.

Julietta smiled when Bobby took her bag freeing her from the task of carrying it.

"Got it," she said aand gave Bobby the thumbs up.

They walked across the open square, Bobby realised more lights were coming to life now and the buildings would be getting even darker inside. He remembered what it had been like to spend the previous night alone in the quiet and, without even realising it edged a bit closer to Etta.

The front of the Hotel was an imposing palladium structure, flush with the other buildings in the street, but with a row of crisp green flags hanging from brackets up between the first floor windows.

A revolving door stood, locked solid, in the middle of the building but next to it was a wide single automatic door. It still refused to budge when Bobby pushed at it however,

"see, all that disability stuff has a bonus at last eh?" he said to Etta, indicating the door, "better than having to go through both of them innit, keep back now." Careful to keep his eyes averted he brought the heavy bronze bust down hard on the safety glass. It took a couple of good hits to crack it, but once weakened he was able to break through and lead them in to the lobby.

The atrium of the lobby was huge, an arched glass ceiling rose above the white marble floor, a tall vase of white lillies a centre piece before the reception desk across the vast space, still feeling light and airy despite the advancing hour rose a wide carpeted stairway. Long wide corridors lead off signposted towards the restaurant, the spa and pool and posh named conference rooms. Bobby realised that he hadn't really been breathing, the place just felt so grand and, gave Etta a broad smile.

"OK luv, what do you want to check out first, the rooms, the kitchens or the pool?"

Julietta walked next to Bobby and smiled a bit when he got closer. He had said that it was his second day, so she, who had almost right away found someone to be with, couldn't really understand how lonely it could get.

Julietta stayed couple of steps away while Bobby broke through the glass and looked around them instead. The city was silent still, there were no sounds apart from the noise Bobby was making. She felt a little wary for a moment, not knowing what was in this city. But then they got in and she quickly slipped inside the hotel.

She was astonished by the sight that spread in front of her. She hadn't really spend much time in hotels, since her family wasn't the traveling type. She was smiling when Bobby turned to smile at her.

"I'd love to have a bath... I think we could find soaps and stuff from here, right?" she said when Bobby asked what she wanted to do, "Yes, a good long bath before heading to bed. Maybe something to eat, too."

"Right then milady," said Bobby, in his best Thunderbirds accent while giving a small mock bow, "I think finding our suite would be the best first step."

Throwing the bronze head down by the front door he led her up the wide staircase. Thanks to Londons arcane planning restrictions the hotel was wide rather than tall and the finest rooms were closer then they might be in a modern skyscraper. Even better, when he lead her down the corridor towards the 'bridal suite', the room he'd guessed would be the nicest of all, he found that the lack of electrics within the hotel meant that the interior doors were all unlocked for safety.

Opening the big doors wide revealed a huge room, light still pouring in through the windows that faced out South and West towards the edge of Green Park. There was a large living area, with a sofa and a cabinet housing a large flat panel TV. There was a big fireplace, made up with logs, ready to be lit and then moving back past a large writing desk was a huge kingsize bed, made up in strong burgundy over cream bed linen with a host of pillows arrayed along the enormous headboard.

"I reckon the bathroom is through there," Bobby suggested, pointing towards an open door, the light shining on white tiles, "and if it's anything like the rest of the room, it should be smashin'. Will this do?"

Julietta followed after Bobby looking around herself as they walked onwards.

When they entered the suite Julietta couldn't stifle the small shriek of excitement that slipped from her lips. It was clean, neat and beautiful. She felt like running around like a little girl. She pushed past Bobby and started to look around in the room.

"This is... this is just so great!" Julietta said turning to look at Bobby. There was a big, bright smile on her face and one could see that she was really excited to be there.

"Isn't it just!" Bobby was already hyped and Etta's enthusiasm was contagious.

"Look, do you want to sort yourself out, see what you can find in the room, the photos made it look like there might already be towels, robes, soap and stuff in the bathrooms. I'll got for an explore, see if the kitchens have got anything we can use to knock up some grub. What do you reckon?"

"Okay," Julietta said and stepped into the bathroom that indeed had towels, soaps and everything you could ask for. It was better supplied than any bathroom she had ever seen and she couldn't wait and try out some of its supplies. Then she turned to Bobby and smiled.

"Okay, now get out and let a lady enjoy her bath," she said happily.

Bobby gave a quick salute and headed out in to the hotel.

Down the stairs, he headed for the dining room on the assumption that the kitchens would be nearby. He could see that the sky was starting to darken and remembered the other lights back at the Circus, so set off back there at a jogging run. Etta would probably be ages in the bath anyway.

He thought about her as he ran for the lights. She looked amazing, her skin had almost a glow to it and her voice, that foreign kind of sing song aspect to it. He wondered what it would be like sleeping with her, and he'd barely started considering when he found he'd arrived at the wide expanse of tarmac dotted with glowing solar lamps.

Bobby scurried about, finding power switches on those that had them and flicking them off to save the precious energy in the batteries, scooping them all up until both hands were full of thin wire handles and the last couple were balanced against his chest. He had to concentrate to keep from dropping any of the lights as he walked back to the hotel, which ensured that Etta's body stayed out of his mind.

Back in the lobby he took a couple of lanterns with no power switches and headed off for the kitchens. There was a huge array of stainless steel surfaces with every manner of cooking utensil you could imagine stored neatly about the place. He checked the fridges, they were all off, but there was all sorts of produce, vegetables, fruit, milk, bread, even meat in the freezer, which was iced up although he wasn't sure how long it'd keep that way without power. Probably just the sheer amount of ice in there from the beginning was keeping it all cold. Etta had said they shouldn't touch anything that wasn't in a tin, but this place didnt' seem to have anything that was in a tin.

Eventually he found some cupboards with tins in, there was tuna, loads of Heinz baked beans, and some jars full of something called antipasta which looked like mushrooms and tomatoes.

He also found some gas powered burners, they looked ornamental, maybe for cooking stuff out at the tables or something.

He pulled the burners out and sparked them up, it took him a while but he just about managed to make something that looked a lot like beans on toast, well, beans on warmed bread anyway. He fried off a load of bacon he'd found in the fridge and boiled up a kettle of water.

Carefully he balanced it all on a tray with a couple of candles he'd found from the dining room and headed upstairs. Knocking on the door before heading in.

Julietta filled out the tub, but didn't get any really warm water out, just lukewarm. But she managed to get a somewhat warm bath drawn and settled in it. It felt nice to soak in the water, wash off all the dirt that had stuck onto her during the day. She also managed to relax for a moment which was total bliss after a day of constant insecurity.

She thought about Niels and cried again for a while and while she was already crying decided to think about her home and parents too, to get at least some of the homesickness out. After a while she managed to calm down again, but the traces of her tears still stayed on her face.

After the water started to turn from warm to cool, from calming to irritating, Julietta got up and wiped herself dry with one of the big towels she found hanging in the room after which she dressed in one of the white robes. It tented a little, but she had picked the bigger one there, so it enveloped her quite well.

She finally settled into one of the sofas in the room and waited for Bobby. She didn't get to wait long when there was already a knock on the door.

Bobby pushed the door open and walked in to the room, balancing the tray with care. Etta was sat on one of the sofas, clean and dry from her bath and looking amazing in the thick white toweling robe. There was a smile on his face again as he headed towards the coffee table.

"Etta, sorry I woz so long, 'ad to nip back and pick up the lamps. But look wot I found, the kitchen is amazing, it's completely full of food, most of it fresh but all of it looking as if it was just put in the fridges and freezers an hour ago. Don't know how that could be, but that's wot there was, I'll show you tomorrow." He'd put the tray down and placed the two candles out in to the middle, flicking his zippo he lit one, then the other before taking the covers off of the plates.

"Sorry the grub ain't up to much, I'm not really that good at cooking and shit and anyway there ain't much in the way of cookin' options down there, the main gas didn't work for me so I 'ad to do it on a kind of indoor barbeque type thing and you said you didn't want any fresh stuff but that's all the kitchen really had." He placed her plate in front of her, three pieces of lightly tanned bread with a large pile of baked beans spread across them, the tomato sauce slowly soaking in to the thick bread slices, a wisp of steam coming from the plate.

"Beans an' tuna was all they had in tins that I could find and I figured you wouldn't want both, you know." Between their two plates he put a third, stacked high with well cooked bacon, "'an you said no fresh food, but it looked really fresh, the right colour an' everything, so I figured you could 'ave some if you really wanted. I think I'll risk it."

Finally he passed her a knife and fork, wrapped in a pristine white linen napkin before sitting down opposite her and bringing his own food up on to his lap.

"Tuck in," he said, looking on expectantly, "at least their Heinz beans."
